Learning from “Revenge of the Great Camera Shootout 2012”

If you haven’t watched it yet, I’d take an hour or two of your time and check out the latest Zacuto series, “Revenge of the Great Camera Shootout 2012”, parts 1 and 2. Much more than a direct camera shootout comparison on how better camera “X” is better than camera “Z”, it really shows how far camera technology has come to the point where it’s really a very subjective opinion as to which one is the “best”. The whole time this reminded me very much of speaker comparison shootouts, where again, favorites being made are highly subjective from person to person.

At this point, shooting a great quality image for your short or film is truly based on skill and the skills of those you have on set with you. Skilled post/finishing people don’t hurt either. Don’t let camera numbers and marketing cloud your thinking. This has been one of the biggest reasons for my excitement of the Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera; it’s affordable to anyone without sacrificing quality. I wish the BMDCC had been built/available for this shootout, because it surely would have produced an amazing image on the screen with the others.

I really believe the BMDCC will be an even bigger hit for cinematographers, new and old, than the 5D Mk II was when it first came out.

Honestly, if you can’t make a beautiful image for your short or movie, don’t blame it on the camera because that surely isn’t the problem.

Shoot, shoot, shoot. Learn from your mistakes. Then shoot, shoot, shoot again.
